Why George Martin Is Called the Fifth Beatle

George Martin is often called the “5th Beatle” due to the significant contributions he made to The Beatles’ music. But did he really deserve that title?
In this talk, Michael Mercier will demonstrate that George Martin absolutely deserved to be called “the 5th Beatle” — that calling him merely the Beatles’ “producer” seriously understates his contribution.
Mr. Mercier will walk through The Beatles’ most innovative songs and discuss the contributions George Martin made to each, from using his own self-invented recording techniques, to suggesting novel approaches that The Beatles adopted, to writing original parts for a variety of instruments, to gathering and recording classical musicians’ performances. He’ll consider whether some of the Beatles’ most celebrated innovations might not have happened without Martin’s imagination and expertise.
Speaker Bio
Michael Mercier’s nickname in college was “Mick” because of his spot-on Mick Jagger imitation, which he performed for anyone who would watch or listen. However, in his 40s his tastes began to mature, and, as a result, his interests gradually shifted away from the Rolling Stones and toward The Beatles. In recent years he developed an interest in music production, which has led him to examine the role that Beatles producer George Martin played in the group’s many innovations and hit songs.
