Nathanael Greene – Hero of the American Revolution
Class Description
Nathanael Greene was one of the few generals to serve with George Washington for the entire Revolutionary War. As the youngest general to serve, Greene played pivotal roles in several major battles and turning points. His story is almost a story of the War itself.
In this presentation, we’ll discuss Greene’s early life and what led him to leave his Quaker upbringing to join the cause for freedom. We’ll follow him through his trials and tribulations as he moves with the Continental Army from Boston, New York, the retreat through New Jersey and the crossing of the Delaware river, and raids on Trenton and Princeton. We’ll see him rise to leadership at the Battle of Brandywine Creek and how his attention to detail and ability to get things done literally saved the Army from starvation at Valley Forge.
And we’ll spend time discussing his command of the Southern army following the devastating defeats at Savanah, Charles Town and Camden. For it was in the South that Greene’s brilliance as a military general led to victory at Yorktown. Through it all, we’ll try to learn something of the man and his character and gain a better understanding of one of the heroes of the American Revolution.
The Education Freedom Tax Credit was enacted as part of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, which was signed into law in July 2025. The permanent federal credit becomes effective January 1, 2027, allowing eligible taxpayers to receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit of up to $1,700 for contributions to approved Scholarship Granting Organizations (SGOs). Some key features include: ● Up to a $1,700 federal tax credit per taxpayer for donations to qualifying SGOs. ● States must opt in to participate. Governors (or another authorized state official) designate participating SGOs. ● Scholarships can be used for a variety of K–12 educational expenses, including private school tuition. ● The first donations eligible for the credit can be made beginning January 1, 2027.
The Education Freedom Tax Credit empowers families by expanding access to the school that best meets their child’s needs. It creates scholarships funded by private donations—not by taking money away from public schools or receiving government funding
Donors receive a dollar-for-dollar federal tax credit for eligible contributions, up to the annual limit established by law, $1700. Instead of sending those tax dollars solely to the federal government, they can help provide scholarships for students.
Speaker Bio
Stephen McClanahan is a retired chemist from the Procter & Gamble Company. He earned his PhD from the University of Kentucky in 1984; following a post-doctoral appointment at the University of North Carolina, he joined P&G and spent his career in Health Care R&D. Upon retirement, he volunteered for several years with various non-profits who serve those experiencing homelessness in Cincinnati before becoming involved in wilderness search & rescue and field emergency medical care. For a long time, he has had a strong interest in genealogy and American history, as his family roots trace to Ireland, Scotland and colonial Virginia. He is an active member of the Cincinnati Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution, participating in the Color Guard and speaker’s program and currently serving as the Chapter’s Chaplain. He and Judy, his wife of 49 years, live in Loveland Ohio and have 3 adult children as well as 3 grandchildren.
Adam Bowling is the State Affiliate Director for the Christian Education Network (CEN), where he leads the organization’s national affiliate expansion strategy. In this role, Adam works with state leaders across the country to establish and strengthen Christian education networks, helping them advance school choice, develop the federal Scholarship Granting Organization (SGO), and advocate for policies that expand educational opportunities for families.
Prior to joining CEN, Adam served with the Ohio Christian Education Network (OCEN), where he helped grow one of the nation’s most successful state Scholarship Granting Organizations. His work focused on expanding access to scholarships for students attending Christian schools throughout Ohio. Earlier in his career, Adam served as the Grassroots Engagement Director for Americans for Prosperity Ohio, where he led grassroots advocacy efforts, coalition building, and public policy campaigns across Southwest Ohio.
Throughout his career, Adam has been passionate about advancing policies that strengthen families, educational freedom, and Christian education.
Adam earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Miami University and a Master of Arts degree from Liberty University. He and his wife, Jennifer, live in Fairfield Twp. Ohio have four children.
