Lee and Grant – Before They Were Titans
Class Description
Robert E. Lee and Ulysses S. Grant’s actions and reputations on the battlefield are obviously well documented. Our presentation tonight centers around their dramatically different upbringings, family heritage, pre-war military experience, and post war lives.
Robert E. Lee (1807-1870) was the prominent Confederate general whose leadership of the Army of Northern Virginia made him one of the most famous figures of the Civil War. Ulysses S. Grant (1822-1885) was the 18th president of the United States, serving from 1869 to 1877, and was the Commanding General of the Union Army, leading it to victory in the American Civil War in 1865.
You’ll see early pictures of Lee and Grant and their families, and hear quotes from those who knew them best. Some things will make perfect sense in relation to the men they became. Other things will surprise you.
Speaker Bio
Rick Roesel is a self described “Avid reader of all things Civil War,” particularly biographies. His interest began as a young boy during the Civil War Centennial years and the abundance of television promotions.
It’s always been interesting to learn what the top military officers (both sides) were like as people. It often explains the actions they took (or didn’t take) during the War’s crucial moments. Rick is a native of Northern Kentucky originally, and a graduate of Eastern Kentucky University. He currently lives in Symmes Township with his wife, Lynn.
Rick’s other hobbies include playing guitar, tennis, and overpaying for collector cars.
